The appointment of the MP for Rochester & Strood follows the shock resignation of the former minister, Andrew Griffiths, after the Sunday Mirror revealed that he sent 2,000 sexually eplicit texts and social media messages to two female consistuents.
Tolhurst has been an MP since 2015 and prior to joining Parliament she ran Tolhurst Associates, a marine survey business, with her father after a career in marketing.
