What was your motivation to start your own business?

David Harris Magician

After performing magic for many years as a hobby for friends, family and the public, the next logical step was to make it into a business.

Whilst you were starting up how did you balance home life with work?

I managed to balance my home life with work as most magic events happen in the evenings or weekends giving me most of the day free to do other things.

What's your top tip for effective sales and marketing?

For me the best tip is to get out there and show people what you do as word of mouth is by far the best form of advertising. Once you have found who is buying your products or booking you, you can then focus your attention on that group of people.

Which tools could you not live without in your business?

For me Facebook, Twitter, Hootsuite and Buffer are great for keeping on top of my social media.

What movie, song or book offers you the most business inspiration and why?

The book that offers me the most business inspiration is a magic book with no effects in, instead tells you how to interact with people, how to market yourself and other useful information. If I'm working on an effect and it's not working, I can usually find the answer in the book.

What's been your biggest business success to date?

My biggest success to date was being flown to Monaco to perform magic at the Grand Prix. And doing Christmas parties for some great companies.

If you had to live on a desert island with one entrepreneur who would it be and why?

It would probably be Sir Richard Branson as he has proved that if you put your mind to something, even if people say it won't work, you can make it happen.

What are your ambitions for the next five years?

My ambitions for the next five years are to increase my client base, and work on more magic shows. I am currently getting ready for my magic show that is happening in April. Full details can be found on my website. I would also love to travel the world showing people magic. It's such a great thing to see and I think everyone should see live magic at least once in there life.

How does being a member of Enterprise Nation help your business grow?

It's a great place to meet new people and make new contacts, from seeing where people get their printing done to being introducing to people who might need my services. The venue for my show in April was found after I did some magic for someone at an Enterprise Nation meet-up some years ago, and they had an event in Chiswick that I performed at and met loads of new people.
