Lunch and Learn: How to start and grow a successful food business

Posted: Wed 17th Mar 2021

In this Lunch and Learn, Petra Barran, founder of KERB, shares her insight into how to start and grow a food business, from the earliest idea stage to the point where you're developing a business plan.

About the speaker

Petra began in the mobile food business in 2005 when she hit the streets with Choc Star, Britain's first dedicated chocolate van. Out on the road, she discovered a go-getting community of fellow traders and saw the potential of their combined power.

In 2009, she co-founded eat.st, a street food collective with the aim of 'driving British street food forward' and then went solo to launch KERB in 2012. An MSc in Urban Studies from UCL has helped to inform and develop KERB's ethos of good people + great food + public spaces = what a city is made for.

Petra was named 'One of the Ten People Who Changed the World' by the Independent in 2011. In 2016, she was named in Big Hospitality's Power List 100 No.6 of the 'disruptors' and in 2018 TimeOut listed her as one of 50 Great Londoners making the city 'a fantastic place to go out in right now'.

After a few years living in New Orleans, hunting for treasure, Petra is back in London and spending her time working on KERB's new online food business course, KERB Classroom and Seven Dials Market's growth, development and return to public life!
