John Cant started delivery service MaruMarket to help local shops in Beverley take on the big supermarkets. We talked to John about how his company's van has helped his business get spotted and look bigger.

Win a makeover for your company van!

This post is part of the Me and My Van series, which takes a look at how small businesses are using company vehicles to 'drive' their business forward. As part of the series, we're offering you the chance to win a makeover for your company van, courtesy of AXA Business Insurance and Easisigns. The winner will also get a video interview, which we'll show on our blog and YouTube channel.

John CantInterview with John Cant, MaruMarket

Q. Tell us a little bit about your business.

John: My company is called MaruMarket and we provide an online shop and home delivery service on behalf of Beverley's independent grocery stores. People shop online at our website, where produce is listed from the local butcher, greengrocer, fishmonger, etc. The customer then chooses an evening delivery window for us to deliver everything together in one convenient bundle.

Q. Now tell us a little bit about your van! What make and model is it? And have you given it a name?

John: We have a silver Citreon Berlingo 4 door. I was planning (and budgeting) to buy a second hand van, but when I went to a local showroom to get an idea of what type of van I wanted they had a "pre-registered" van on the forecourt with only 6 miles on the clock...

I got chatting to the salesmen and got the impression that they were very keen to sell it quickly. I called them the next day and after some great negotiating (if I do say so myself!) we picked up a real bargain.

I was away in Liverpool when I agreed the deal, so I've called the van "Ringo".

Q. How do you use your van in your business?

John: I use it everyday for delivering fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bread, cakes, coffee, chocolates and other groceries to the people of East Yorkshire.

Q. How did your business change when you bought your van?

John: We couldn't operate without our van!

Q. So, what kind of feedback did you get from your branded van?

John: We got our logo put on as soon as we could. It's a great advertisement for our company. When you compare the price of branding a vehicle to advertising in a newspaper, it's a no-brainer. I often park it at different places in the town so that it will get spotted by different people. Photos of our van have been tweeted by customers when they've spotted us. But my favourite is when people say "I saw one of your vans the other day". It gives the impression that we're much bigger than we are.
