More than 50% of Britain's smallest companies still don't have a website despite the massive potential of the web for growing a business, new government data reveals.
The Office of National Statistics (ONS) said only 46% of micro firms have an online presence, compared to 81% of businesses with between 10 and 49 employees and 97% of large organisations with up to 1,000 staff.
The UK's micro-entrepreneurs are also using social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn to promote their products and services in smaller volumes than larger companies with only 30% doing so.
When it comes to blogs and microblogs like Twitter, 77% of businesses with 1,000 or more employees use them compared to just 15% of those with 0 to 9 employees.
ONS also analysed e-commerce and found that in 2015, businesses generated a total of Â£234.1bn in website sales, an increase on Â£213bn in 2014. Micro companies were responsible for Â£18.8bn of the website sales last year.
