Running a small business comes with its own set of challenges and opportunities – but that's completely normal.
At EDF, we've teamed up with Relish, a UK-based agency, to gather practical tips directly from other small businesses like yours.
These insights focus on building sustainability, strengthening financial management and boosting operational resilience.
Each topic area is packed with advice shared by peers who've been there. As well as this, we've included the top three energy-saving tips from EDF's small business director Jon Perks.
Think of this as a community-driven guide. Let's help small businesses learn from one another and grow together. When we share knowledge, we keep small businesses thriving.
Financial management: Stay lean and in control
Financial pressures are increasing year-on-year, and many small businesses struggle with their decision-making because they feel hurried or they've received poor advice.
Avoid making rushed decisions: Take time to evaluate offers from brokers or service providers. Always do your research!
Consider carefully before applying for loans: Start lean and scale sustainably. Be realistic and work within your budget.
Monitor your costs: Regular supplier reviews and cost tracking are essential for profitability.
Don't be afraid of risk: Take some risks or you'll never grow.
Operational efficiency: Smart tech + expertise = time saved
Efficiency is about doing more with less. Our insights show that technology and expertise are beneficial.
Use smart tools: Modern payment systems and smart tools such as smart meters save you a significant amount of time.
Stay focused: Avoid diversifying too early on. Keep your focus on your core goals.
Make the most of the expertise available: You should be versatile across many areas, but don't think you must be an expert in every field. Hire wisely and look for people who are not only skilled but adaptable and able to interact well with customers.
Sustainability: Think long-term and act early
Relish's research highlighted that sustainability is no longer optional – it's becoming a priority.
Small businesses that build sustainability into their operations early on are better positioned for long-term success.
Plan ahead: Businesses that invest in solar, electric vehicle (EV) charging and energy efficiency from the outset are seeing long-term cost savings and brand-related benefits.
Use grants and free resources: Many small businesses are unaware of the funding available for green upgrades. Relish's findings show that tapping in to these resources can accelerate transformation.
Jon Perks' energy-saving tips
Our small business director Jon recently took part in a Lunch and Learn webinar for Enterprise Nation around how businesses can save cash and carbon from the outset.
You can watch the full session below, but here are Jon's top-three energy-saving tips:
Power down devices whenever you're not using them.
Switch old-style or halogen bulbs to more energy-efficient LED bulbs and light strips.
Get everyone involved – small changes can add up!
Relationship building
Lastly, networking and building relationships is so important. Trust and connections lead to better deals and support.
Make the most of all the community and peer support available to you. Learn from other business owners' successes and mistakes and share experiences.
