Why disruption is overrated – and enhancement builds legacies

Why disruption is overrated – and enhancement builds legacies

Disruptor – it’s a trendy label, isn’t it? Start-ups shout it from the rooftops, industries claim they've been shaken by the latest big idea and every pitch seems to hinge on proving just how disruptive it is.

But here’s a thought: do we ever pause to question why we’re so obsessed with disruption?

In many ways, it’s become a status symbol, like wearing the latest branded trainers or boasting a flashy new tech gadget. It signals relevance and edge. But behind the buzzword, what does disruption actually achieve?

Sometimes, disruption can feel more like a wrecking ball than a solution – breaking systems that don’t need fixing while creating chaos where refinement would have sufficed.

Founding The Talent Navigator, I never aspired to be a disruptor and I don’t think the recruitment industry needs one. Instead, I believe the industry needs enhancement.

Recruitment is an old business, but it’s not broken. It doesn’t need the rulebook thrown out; it needs smarter tools, sharper insights and a deeper understanding of what makes people and organisations thrive.

The disruption myth

Let’s take AI as an example. It’s often hailed as the ultimate disruptor, a game-changer poised to replace traditional ways of working. But in reality, AI isn’t here to destroy; it’s here to enhance. It’s a tool – one that makes us better, sharper, smarter. It amplifies human capabilities rather than erasing them.

This philosophy is at the heart of The Talent Navigator. I don’t promise to upend your entire recruitment strategy or revolutionise the way you hire overnight. Instead, I blend recruitment psychology, advanced tools like situational judgment tests (SJTs) and decades of industry experience to deliver smarter hiring decisions and long-term success.

Recruitment doesn’t need to be reinvented

Recruitment isn’t broken – far from it. But it’s often weighed down by inefficiencies, outdated practices and a lack of clarity. Many businesses rely on instinct rather than insight, or they struggle to attract the right talent because they don’t fully understand what makes a job appealing in today’s market. That is where a recruitment company like The Talent Navigator comes in.

The Talent Navigator isn't interested in making noise for the sake of it. Our mission is simple: to help businesses craft roles that attract, inspire and retain the right people. We do this by focusing on three key pillars:

  • Creativity: We build job ads and descriptions with emotional resonance, tied directly to your company’s values and culture. It’s not about flashy language or overpromising; it’s about crafting a message that speaks to the right candidates

  • Psychology: As recruitment psychologists, we use tools like SJTs to assess not just skills but cultural fit, retention propensity and potential for growth. This ensures you’re not just hiring the most qualified person but the one who’ll thrive in your organisation

  • Strategy: We combine data-driven insights with deep industry knowledge to streamline the hiring process, reduce costs and increase the quality of hires. Whether it’s advising on reward structures or identifying the right talent pools, our approach is always grounded in what works

Enhancement in action

Let’s paint a picture of how enhancement works in practice. Imagine you’re a start-up struggling to scale. Your biggest challenge? High turnover and mismatched hires drain time and resources. You’re not alone; it’s a common issue for growing businesses.

Enter The Talent Navigator. We start by understanding your business inside out – your culture, values, goals and the unique challenges you face. From there, we craft bespoke recruitment strategies that go beyond surface-level solutions. This might include:

  • Building SJTs tailored to your organisation’s needs, such as our trademarked CXFit™ or SalesFit™ assessments

  • Writing emotionally resonant job ads that speak directly to your ideal candidates

  • Advising on reward structures to ensure your roles are competitive and aligned with market expectations

The result? Not just better hires but a stronger foundation for long-term growth. No disruption, no chaos – just results.

Enhancement is the smarter choice

Disruption makes for great headlines, but it often prioritises short-term impact over lasting value. Enhancement, on the other hand, is about building something sustainable.

It’s about recognising the strengths of an existing system and making it better, smarter and more efficient. For businesses, this approach is not only more practical but also more cost-effective in the long run.

Take our work with AI as an example. Rather than using it as a blunt instrument to automate hiring processes, we integrate AI into our tools to augment human decision-making. Our SJTs are a perfect blend of science and strategy, providing nuanced insights into candidates that traditional methods often miss.

What does this mean for your business?

If you’re an entrepreneur, start-up founder, or small business owner, you’ve likely felt the pressure to disrupt your industry. But disruption isn’t always the answer.

Sometimes, what your business really needs is a partner who can enhance what’s already working and help you build on it. That’s where The Talent Navigator comes in. We believe in delivering value without the drama.

About Me I’m the co-founder of Planet Buu, a UK-based emotional wellbeing platform for children navigating sadness, sensory overload, and shutdowns. Our tools are clinically informed, story-led, and emotionally quiet — designed to help children feel seen, not fixed. The idea grew from personal experience: I’m a parent to a sensitive, likely neurodivergent daughter, and I wanted to create the kind of emotional support I wish I’d had as a child — and the kind we needed as a family. My background spans psychology, executive search, and psychometric consulting. I’ve spent 20+ years helping organisations understand people. Now, I’m using that same lens to build something that helps children feel heard. I co-created Planet Buu with my wife, Yulia Hartshorn — a qualified teacher-logopedist with a degree in practical psychology and formal clinical training across neuropsychology, speech and language development, and special educational needs. She’s worked directly with children across autism, ADHD, and complex emotional needs, and brings the clinical integrity to everything we make. Her content avoids therapeutic cliché and focuses instead on emotional truth — quiet, non-performative, and grounded in co-regulation. Together, we’ve created a story-led emotional toolkit that includes illustrated books, huggable characters, and a monthly membership that expands the world of Planet Buu. It’s been designed with both parent and child in mind — especially for families navigating SEN/ADHD traits, shutdowns, or emotional difficulty. All our characters, words, and visuals are carefully crafted to support emotional processing in the moments where words fall short. We’re SEIS-eligible, bootstrapped, and preparing to launch via Kickstarter in June 2025. Longer term, we see Planet Buu as a scalable emotional support platform, with applications across education, parenting, and early intervention. My parallel work continues through The Talent Navigator, a consulting practice offering strategic hiring support, capability diagnostics, and psychometric x-rays for leadership teams. I’m BPS-accredited, trained in Saville Assessments A/B and work across sectors including tech, telecoms, industrial, and healthcare. We’re now looking to connect with early investors, advocates, and mission-aligned partners — people who understand the link between childhood emotional safety and long-term human potential.
