The founder of a brand strategy and communications collective says embracing failure is a critical component of success.
East Yorkshire-based Electric Peach founder Sophie Lee discovered the hard way that by failing to address her personal challenges, she was creating problems for her business.
"Unfortunately, I learned that when you ignore your personal struggles, they eventually manifest in your business.
"Early on, I faced severe obstacles. I was battling mental health issues and drug addiction, but that was causing me to make critical errors, like failing to be scrupulous enough in enforcing contracts with clients and employees.
"I had an incident where an employee managed to take a key client because proper contracts weren't in place. That remains one of my most painful lessons.
"I was so busy pretending that everything was fine that I never took the time to address the underlying issues. That oversight nearly cost me not just a client, but my business's integrity."
Sophie adds:
"Every mistake forced me to re-evaluate my approach. I realised that being honest about my problems wasn't a weakness, but rather the foundation for sustainable growth.
"By confronting my personal faults, I was able to rebuild Electric Peach into a model of ethical practices and creative excellence."
Addressing personal challenges head-on
Sophie has used those experiences to shape her business and now works with mission-driven SMEs on brand development and visual and communication strategy, including website development and design.
She's also involved in group programmes and one-to-one consultancy with female founders to help them tell their stories more effectively on stages, podcasts and written content.
Today, Electric Peach operates as a collective, but at one stage Sophie had nine employees. She now feels the associate approach – where a team of 10 professionals work on client projects – is the most successful business model for her going forward.
She concludes:
"Addressing personal challenges head-on transformed how I run my business. It's not just about success in the boardroom - it's about honouring the human experience behind every decision.
"My mistakes became my most valuable lessons, and they continue to inspire our mission at Electric Peach."
