Meet the former city boys attempting to bring cleaning into the digital age.
Tom Brooks and Pete Dowds aren't your typical Start-up founders. After what sounds like a rather large house party one chilly April night last year and an unsuccessful morning after spent searching for a cleaner online, they spotted a gap in the market. On 1st April 2013, Mopp was founded and the former city boys, Pete a Lawyer and Tom a trader, were taking cleaning digital.
First came the website, a sleek site that connects cleaners with potential clients. Their unique geo-location system, a flat-rate of Â£10 per hour and solid vetting procedures combine to help customers find a reliable cleaner located nearby, and with monthly growth averaging 200% for the past year it would appear their stress free method of connecting people to cleaners is working.
The website was joined by an App in March of this year, and the handy payment feature which allows customers to pay simply by taking a photograph of their bank card is helping to push the service as a must-have time-saver. You can have a cleaner booked in less than a minute
Mopp is appealing to a wide demographic, "We have a lot of busy professionals, families and couples using the service, but really the common theme is busy customers who don't have the time to find a quality cleaner" and perhaps most importantly most of their customers come back. The company pride themselves on getting all the small things right, be it making sure the cleaner can speak English to a high standard, to ensuring they arrive on time. The real effort is put in behind the scenes which has been important in ensuring customers come back time and again, and with such a niche service that was always going to be critical.
It was a high risk start-up - quitting successful jobs in the city and living without salaries for the first ten months, as well as maxing out their credit cards but the boys have no regrets. They tell me: "The perks of a City job have their appeal, but nothing matches the excitement and energy in making a success of your own idea". Their growth figures are impressive, and online reviews sing their praises, but they are particularly proud of the service which they believe is giving the cleaners a far better deal. No contracts or admin fees and their policy of assigning jobs based on location to reduce travelling time means the cleaners get to earn more.
Mopp is currently available in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and Brighton and set to expand to cover the whole of the UK in coming months.
