The South London youth organisation looking for financial security
Posted: Tue 13th Aug 2024
Duffus Community Foundation (DCF) supports children and young people from South London and Surrey who are experiencing difficulties with confidence, self-esteem or any other life challenges that are affecting their wellbeing.
Led by Brian Duffus, the organisation runs wellbeing programmes that provide tips and strategies on subjects such as leading a healthy lifestyle, managing stress and becoming more resilient.
DCF also runs a monthly youth group in west Croydon, which gives the young people involved access to recreational activities, trips during school holidays, and media projects where they can create podcasts and short films.
How Grow London Local helped Brian
DCF has encountered a number of challenges relating to recruitment, and finding the right people to employ. Also, being a charitable organisation, the business spends a lot of time seeking the funding it needs to become more financially sustainable.
Brian spoke with Grow London Local Business Support Manager Danny Gomez, and was referred to Innovate UK for help with business strategy and planning.

Tell us about your business.
My name is Brian Duffus and I'm from Duffus Community Foundation, also known as DCF for short. DCF is a South London and Surrey-based charity that supports children and young people with a view to improving their wellbeing and mental health.
What are some challenges you face as a business owner?
The biggest challenge so far is recruitment. Making sure that we get the right people with the right skillset. Another area that's been difficult is, as a charity, it's about seeking financial security. We're always on the lookout to ensure that we have enough funds to help with operational costs.
How has Grow London Local helped your business?
I became aware of Grow London Local by going to a networking event in December 2023. I met with Danny Gomez and we struck up a good rapport and relationship. Danny was able to ask me specific questions around our business needs and what areas of development we were looking to use.
We were paired up with an organisation called Innovate UK and a business mentor called Maurice Sardison. We met to discuss how to develop my strategic approach in order to build our business growth. The sessions are monthly and they've been excellent.
Why would you recommend Grow London Local?
I'd recommend Grow London Local because they've got great people and communication skills and that enabled me to feel comfortable to explain and express where we were as an organisation.
And that, in turn, enabled them to match me appropriately to someone who can build on our business vulnerabilities.
