"When the world said I didn't fit in – I designed clothes that do."
That's how Millie Haywood, founder of Mentallyunstitched, sums up her business in five words. It's a line that does a lot of work — because the brand isn't really about hoodies. It's about a young woman who spent years not knowing why she felt out of step with everyone else, and who eventually turned that experience into a product.
A brand built from her own journey
Millie describes Mentallyunstitched as a brand "created from my own journey – one shaped by years of navigating anxiety, sensory overwhelm, and a world that didn't always make space for the way I experience it."
She lived more than 21 years of her life not knowing she was autistic, causing her mental health to suffer as a result.
Rather than staying quiet about it, she noticed a stigma around mental health and neurodivergence and decided she wanted to change that — which sparked the idea behind the brand: creating clothes that let people feel comfortable and confident being themselves.
