What is online PR?

Leon Bailey Green with Alesha Dixon

21/11/2008 send to a friend

This question was put to online marketing expert, Leon Bailey Green: "I know about traditional PR – it's all about getting myself in the press/on radio/on TV but what is online PR and how do I go about being good at it?" Leon responds...

Online PR is all about getting mentioned on websites, blogs, videos, email and social networks, as well as monitoring when you're mentioned.

Many of the same principles apply. You get PR when you do or have something worth talking about - get it in front of the right people and the coverage is yours, unless of course something else happens that has more conversational value.

The difference with online PR is that you need to get your message in front of many types of publisher - personal blogger, professional blogger, online journalist and of course everyone who uses social networks.

Find the most influential websites and blogs in your niche and develop a relationship with them. Study their websites, particularly the content and tone, and let them know when you have something to say that's relevant.

If you're lucky these websites will also link to you, which helps with your search engine ranking.

So make sure you have something to say, work out which online publishers your message is relevant to and let them know!

Comment: I am increasingly finding that online PR is as powerful as off-line PR. For example, the BBC found me on a blog and this led to me going on a programme which is being filmed in January, and I am now in talks about presenting a marketing programme! Also, the mighty powers that be at Google found me on this fantastic website, leading to a project I will be working on in January which is huge. The best advice is given in this article and that is to always focus on where and how you can add value when you join a forum. Also, I have had successes using response source.com and source wire.com, where you pay a nominal fee to post your press release, but you get great exposure and quality click through to your website.
