99 designs

09/02/2009 send to a friend

Started by these four young fellows shown here, 99designs is described as a ‘disruptive startup which connects passionate designers from around the globe with savvy clients who need design projects completed in a timely fashion without the usual risk or cost associated with professional design.’

By designers, for designers

We were pointed in the direction of this site by Nick Barker who maintains a blog called Nickpoint. You can read about Nick’s adventures with 99designs.com here in which he talks about 37 designers producing 146 design concepts for a logo.

The process works in four steps:

Step 1: Create Your Design Brief

You are asked a few simple questions that will form your design brief. It costs around $39 USD to post your brief on 99designs.com.

Step 2: Set Your Budget

You are asked how much you’re willing to pay the winning designer to purchase their design. This is called the prize. Prize amounts generally range from $150 to $600 depending on the type of design you require.

Step 3: Work with the Designers

Once your design brief has been posted to 99designs.com, designers from around the globe submit design concepts to compete for your prize. It’s your job to rate the designs and provide feedback to help the designers deliver what you want.

Step 4: Choose Your Favorite Design

At the completion of the design contest (which is typically 7 days) you will choose a winning design and pay the designer the prize amount. The designer will send you their completed design.

Sounds simple enough. If you’re looking for a new logo or design, check out this site and let us know how you get on.

Comment: Almost 99% of PROFESSIONAL graphic designers will disagree with the above concept, take a read here before visiting 99Designs.

What about all the designers who spend time designing and then don't win? Who pays them for their time and effort? If they do win the minimum they could be paid is $100 which is £67! Is that fair?

You may well say that they don't have to enter, well this is actually the case and 99% of professional designers would NEVER enter a contest like this.

The people that in-fact do are mainly students still learning and people with no experience and a dodgy copy of Photoshop/Illustrator, you may be lucky and get what you need but how do you know your logo won't be entered into the next competition, do you really want 10, 20, 50 other companies all with the same logo as you?

The reason a logo designer charges so much is because logos take time to design, there are MANY factors to be taken into consideration by a professional logo designer, how will the logo look when printed? How will the logo look when re-sized?.

A professional logo designer will spend time researching your main competitors to see how they represent themselves, they will have a brain storming session creating maybe 4 or 5 logo options, tweaking and adjusting them with your input until they have the right logo for your business. Do you really think you will receive all of that from 99designs when the monetary prize is so low?

Your logo is a VERY important part of your business, before a potential customer even walks through your door your logo will give that customer an impression of who they are dealing with, it can make your company appear large, small, fun, serious, professional, un-professional!...the list goes on. Your logo is the starting point of your whole corporate image, the colours, typography and style of your logo will often dictate how the rest of your company’s literature will look.

DON'T scrimp on logo design, use a professional and ensure copyright is assigned to you.

We have many professional UK based logo designers on our forum...

It's concepts like this that devalue designers and put them out of business.

Comment: Re. the comment above, I've used an apparently professional site for a few logos in the past (logojeez) and almost all the entrants in the contests hosted on 99designs look better than the pros at logojeez could manage.

Perhaps the commenter has an axe to grind??

Comment: I agree with the first post, if you choose the right design company or professional freelancer you will get a much better result than 99 designs, it may cost more but you are paying for their expertise.

Your logo/brand is such an important part of your business.
