Now in its fourth year, the Enterprising Britain Competition is a search to find the most enterprising place in the UK. Contenders are put forward from each of the 12 regions. These regional champs then fight it out to win the attention of a judging panel that this year includes Peter Jones (of Dragons Den fame), James Murray-Wells (founder, Glasses Direct) and Claire Dove (founder, Blackburne House.) Who will be crowned 2008 winner?

Top spot

Past winners of the Enterprising Britain Competition include Sherwood Energy Village in the East Midlands and Stoke in the West Midlands.

Here at Enterprise Nation we've been connected with the competition, working with Shrewsbury on its entry in the first year of the competition; an entry that focused on Shropshire as a hot spot for home based businesses. The top award was taken by Sherwood but we did claim the title of national runner-up which was a nice prize for the county. Shropshire took its win and went on to develop the UK's first facility for home business owners that now successfully operates under the brand, Enterprise HQ.

They took the view that it's not about winning the title - it's about how to make the most of what you're given. They did a great job of maximising value from connections made during the competition and squeezing every drop of PR from being national runner-up!

So back to this year ..who are the contenders?

You can see the full list by clicking here. From Scarborough in Yorkshire to Heart of Hawick in Scotland, these places will be strutting their enterprising stuff as judges visit and put enterprise projects under the spotlight.

The winner will be announced in September - and goes forward to a European competition. When the announcement is made, we're going to take a look at what the enterprise capital is doing about encouraging and supporting home business.

Until then, good luck to the vying contenders!
