The ABC of SEO

SEO stands for search engine optimisation and it’s the process that gets your site to the top (or near the top) of online search results. Here are a few simple things you can do to improve your SEO.
SEO can make the difference between your site being seen – or not. Yet it’s something that we probably all neglect to a degree.
So here’s a couple of small and simple things you can do to make a difference to your SEO.
- Write some content – the more you upload content on your site or post on your blog, the more likely you are to be picked up by the Google spiders!
- Request a link – write to a site that you think attracts your same audience and request that they link to you, in exchange for a reciprocal link from you to them. The more links, the more visible you’ll be.
- Check your title page – this is the bit that shows above the top of the browser. Make sure that it’s short but also includes the ‘keywords’ that you want people to be searching for when they come across your site.

Comment: You'll also want to be having that all-important and well-researched sought-after keyword phrase in the meta description tag of your home page, in an H1 tag, in link anchor texts from other pages to the home page, and at least once in the first paragraph of the plentiful text content you'll be putting on there. If your site developer or designer read any of that and can't understand it, to avoid ending up with a perfectly professional web site that will be ignored by the search engines, you really do need to adjust your budget to include attention from someone like myself who understands these things. It's something that the average startups don't know they need to budget for - but need to they do! BB

Comment: I agree with Bill that you need to include a budget for SEO when you have your website built. In fact, I don't think a professionally-designed website should be missing any of the elements he mentions - it's not rocket science to build this in at the beginning!

Comment: If you do a search for SEO there is a bewildering amount of information. But it really doesn't need to be that complicated (Bill is right). It also doesn't need to be expensive. Any decent web design company should really include it in the price. But it isn't something you can do once and then forget. It is a continual process that needs your commitment over time.

Comment: Thanks for your comment, Andrew. We've just uploaded a 'how to' tip that profiles a new book coming out 'Getting to the top of Google' - it could be an interesting (and hopefully basic!) read for anyone who wants to do more to raise their site profile. Your're right that simple and non-costly is best!

But most do not. And SEO specialist companies end up picking up the pieces and re-coding a website to be SE friendly. It costs as much to make a poorly written website SE friendly as to create it in the first place.
SEO needs considering ideally before the design and certainly before any code is written to get the most effective marketing websites.
