Testing your sales prowess
29/07/2008 send to a friend
US sales pro, Jeffrey Gitomer, asks a question in his latest e-news to test the reader’s sales mettle. The question is: ‘If you meet someone at a networking event and you do not think they will become a customer should you…’ read on for the options.
Should you …
- Develop a relationship because they may know someone who could be a customer
- Give them your sales pitch so they can tell other people they meet
- Have a brief, pleasant conversation and perhaps find common areas of interest you share
- Be brief, be polite, be gone
In the e-news, you have to click on the answer you think is the right one.
I will admit it. I clicked on an answer deemed incorrect (but I’m not going to tell you which one!)
The correct answer is…
3. Have a brief, pleasant conversation and perhaps find common areas of interest you share
Would you have gone for the right option?
It’s more fun if you do this as the e-news quiz. Find out more on Jeffrey Gitomer’s website. You may even like to consider this quiz feature as something to include in your own e-news. – Emma Jones

Comment: I'd do 1, 2 and 3. I don't think they're mutually exclusive.

Comment: I chose the only one you didn't! Do you think this shows me up as a shallow individual and deadbeat sales exec?

Comment: I must be a good girl for once because I chose the right answer probably because I squirm when somebody tries to make a huge pitch at me when they barely know me and it's just as bad at the opposite end of the spectrum , when they ask your name, make an immediate decision that you cannot help them and start avidly looking over your shoulder for the next poor suspect to pounce on.
This happened to me at the hotel du vin in Brighton a year ago when it was obvious I could be of no use to a chap after he found out what I did. So, I actually said to him "you're not really interested in me, are you" safe to say we did not exchange business cards! Am I too Yorkshire in my approach? I love talking to people and finding out about them but it works if it is a two-way street doesn't it?
Just a few thoughts......

Comment: No.3 because people do business with people, if you get on you will fall over yourself to do business and good business, personalities and shared interests do very much come into it.
