Quick tip: Record a Skype call for a podcast

Yesterday afternoon, I gave Enterprise Nation founder Emma Jones a quick call about her new book Working 5 to 9: How to start a successful business in your spare time. The conversation, we thought, would make for a interesting podcast. So, using Skype, we recorded our chat, which you can hear tomorrow. In the meantime, if you'd like to record a Skype call and use it as a podcast for your business, here's how.

Here at Enterprise Nation, we use Skype to keep our call costs low. In fact, we think it's one of the cheapest ways to get a second line for your home business.

But - did you know? - it's also a great way to record a podcast. We did just that yesterday. And here's how:

  1. Sign up for a free Skype account, if you haven't already, and download Skype software to your computer.
  2. If you're using a Windows computer, download Pamela Call Recorder, which is an "add-on tool" that lets you record your Skype calls. If you're on a Mac, you can download Call Recorder for Skype, which lets you do the same thing. Both have free trial versions, but cost around £13 when that's done.
  3. Call up your interviewee using Skype. If they're a Skype user too, that'll be a free call. But if they're on a fixed or mobile line, you'll need to get some Skype Credit.
  4. Once you've made a connection and agreed with the interviewee about recording your conversation, hit the record button on your Call Recorder software and you're off!
  5. Edit your recording with Audacity, which is free for Windows and Macs, or with GarageBand, which is what we used. It comes with most Macs or is £71 as part of the iLife package. And the easiest way to share your recording is by uploading it to AudioBoo, which lets people listen to it on the web, embedded on your website or iTunes or mobile phones.

Look out for my interview with Emma Jones tomorrow, using the steps above. And if you've got any other tips for recording a Skype call for a podcast, let us know in the comments below.

Comment: On a Mac, Audio Hijack also does this, although only audio.

It has a neat trick of being able to record each half of the conversation in a separate channel (L/R). Sometimes useful when conducting interviews.

It's a handy little program and will record any audio which passes through your Mac (even BBC iPlayer).

It's from the oddly-named www.rogueaomeba.com

Comment: Yeah, I'm a big Audio Hijack fan, though it's a bit more fiddly. More powerful at the same time though, as it can literally record any noise your Mac makes, including YouTube and iPlayer, etc.

Thanks for sharing it, Colin!

Comment: Thanks, I use Skype all the time and especially for work related meetings. It's cheap and I love the added benefit of the video tool as I am a 'remote' business with colleagues all over the UK.

Comment: VodBurner for Skype is a Skype video recording & editing app... and it's free. You can record Skype video calls, edit them (change cameras, add sub-titles, delete / trim video etc), and upload to YouTube from within VodBurner. Download VodBurner from www.vodburner.com.
