Is home office isolation a good or bad thing?
30/07/2007 send to a friend
In a recent article, Web Worker Daily - love 'em! - have raised an interesting question, near and dear to my own heart: is home office isolation helpful or harmful?
I agree with them that it's something of a dichotomy:
"...we’re more liberated than almost any other gainfully employed professionals, and yet it seems that at times this freedom makes us free to work all day and night in blissful (or not) isolation from our small home offices."
On the one hand it can get very lonely in my humble home office; on the other, if I'm working to a deadline or on something that demands intense concentration, it can be a real God-send.
What do you think? Do you like the isolation that working from home gives you? Or are you spending more time at the coffee shop, just to be around other people?
I'd love to hear from you in the comments. – San Sharma

Enterprise Nation is undertaking the largest ever survey of home businesses and we'd love you to help!
It'll only take a few minutes. Your responses won't be shared but they will paint a picture of just what's happening in entrepreneurial homes across the UK. The results will be written up in our 2008 Home Business Report, which will be free and available on the site in October.

Comment: I often find that my clients descend into a pit of gloom and despondency when their home office is poorly set up. By creating a great work station, organised, peaceful, inspiring and motivating, the space supports them every minute of the day. Planning a work schedule also helps to maintain a sense of purpose. It doesn't have to be set in stone; leaving gaps for a walk round the garden, an impromptu lunch outing or a biscuit break after a hard bargaining session! You may have relied too heavily on your previous employer to provide all the office banter opportunities, the drinks machine and the after work socialising. All you need to do now is be your own boss and organise the things you want for yourself. Working from home can be the best thing you ever did, you just need to plan it to be that way!
