Don’t forget your own development needs
23/07/2008 send to a friend
When running your own business, it’s all too easy to focus on the development needs of others (staff & family) and forget about yourself. Helen Astill is MD of Cherington HR and offers guidance on keeping yourself in the frame.
Personal development
It’s so important to develop the skills and competencies you need to manage your business and help it grow.
Consider:
- What you must be able to do to run your business legally.
- What you should be able to do to manage the business more effectively.
- What you could do to meet your longer-term goals.
Your development needs will alter as the business grows so managing change is also important and should be included in your list of key competencies.
If you need a little nudge to encourage you to do this, Helen advises seeking help from a business coach or HR consultant.

Survey
Enterprise Nation is undertaking the largest ever survey of home businesses and we'd love you to help!
It'll only take a few minutes. Your responses won't be shared but they will paint a picture of just what's happening in entrepreneurial homes across the UK. The results will be written up in our 2008 Home Business Report, which will be free and available on the site in October.
