Business or Home Broadband: What's best for the home worker?

16/12/2008 send to a friend
If you work from home, then we don't have to tell you how important it is that you have a reliable and speedy internet connection. Away from the security of an office, and an internal phone call away from instant IT Support having a fast and unrestrictive broadband service is your key to running a successful business in a home environment.
With so much relying on your broadband then, which should you opt for? A standard home broadband service, or a dedicated business package?
It's a question for which there's no right or wrong answer - each home worker will have different requirements and will be working under different circumstances. However, there are a couple of factors that could help you make the most appropriate decision.
Business broadband packages are generally priced a little higher than home broadband packages although set-up is generally free. However, dedicated business broadband packages offer much faster download speeds (ranging from 8Mb to 24Mb) and far more generous download limits.
Most of the current business broadband offers include useful extras for the home worker who may dabble in a bit of out of house connectivity, that are far more generous than Home Broadband deals. For example, BT Business-Class is currently offering 500 BT Openzone minutes per month or alternatively, the chance to get a free mobile broadband and remote support.
There's nothing to stop you sticking with your original home broadband ñ there are no rules to say if you work from home you must purchase Business Broadband. If you tend to work on your own at home, your only real concern is that your download limit is adequate (especially if your work requires you to deal with large amounts of multimedia content) and your connection is fast enough for you to get on with your work without restriction.

Comment: I would point out that many comparison sites do not have a full listing of broadband and telephony suppliers. Those that are listed have to pay the comparison site a referral fee which is passed on to the suppliers customer.
