This is not strictly a home business story but a friend of mine has hung up his corporate shoes (as a partner in a big commercial law firm) to put on his deck shoes and jump on board. He’s a crew member on a Transatlantic voyage and has signed me up to receive the captain’s daily log. Which is definitely not a blog.

Day one

This is the first post from the boat’s skipper, which will make bloggers smile.

"Welcome to Northern Child's logs for the Transatlantic voyage 2008!

These logs will hopefully come out on a daily basis and keep you fully informed on our progress and life on board. It's not a blog, because I was writing them before that term came into modern usage. I'm writing from a sailboat on the ocean and therefore I use the old nautical term 'log'. In the old days of sailing ships the Master would stream a piece of wood, or log, on a piece of rope out the back of the boat and the number of knots that paid out in a certain time would indicate their speed. This information was recorded on paper, which eventually became known as the ships log. Which is also where the nautical term for speed, knots, comes from. You get the idea - I'm too old to call it a blog, it's a log....."

So there you go. You learn a little something every day! – Emma Jones
